Dry January is a movement that a British charity called Alcohol Change started in 2012 as an initiative to “ditch the hangover, reduce the waistline and save some serious money by giving up alcohol for 31 days."
Dry January is gaining in popularity in the United States and is a great way to start off the new year on a healthy note. Not drinking for a month (like the 21 Day Sober Holidays) can reset your relationship with alcohol as well as save money, improve sleep and overall health, and can be a great mental/physical challenge and goal!
As most of us know, alcohol consumption can wreak havoc on the body, including dehydration, poor sleep quality, and a weakened immune system. By taking a break from alcohol for a month, you can give your body a chance to recover and improve your overall health.
Additionally, participating in Dry January can help you reevaluate their relationship with alcohol, and potentially make healthier choices when it comes to drinking in the future. I wish I had taken time off years ago to try to understand why I was drinking and to develop better coping skills.
Participating in Dry January can also be a great way to save money. Alcohol can be expensive, and choosing to abstain for a month can help you save money that would have gone to drinks. This can be a great way to kick-start savings goals for the new year! There also are apps that you can download to show you how much money you save when you abstain.
Dry January is a fantastic way to start off the new year in a healthy and positive way!
